Sand scripts (Ultrasound), 2024-25

Part of the Sand scripts series, I explore the use of language through sand, a natural material found in a politically charged landscape. Motivated by the protest sign, particularly those created during the uprising in Puerto Rico in the summer of 2019 and the height of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, I employ language that resonates with themes of resistance and questions our colonial lived experience. Sand scripts (Ultrasound) draws on the context and visuals of my mother’s ultrasound of me taken a few weeks before my birth, alongside the phrase written in sand a ___________grows inside her in both English and Spanish.
