Through her, 2020

I lip-sync a recording of my mother’s voice as she read a text around ideas on colonialism, otherness, and piles (both physical and metaphoric). I’m in the diaspora, while she is on the island, so this action challenges the liminal spaces between the mainland and the colony. While in past iterations I’ve focused on reverberating historic speeches figures, I explore the voice of my mother, and what it means to carry over a genealogical legacy of ideals and connections through her vocalization.
